Dexamethasone is a type of corticosteroid medication or drug. It is utilized in the treatment of the many conditions, including rheumatic problems, variety of skin diseases, severe allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, croup, brain swelling, eye surgery, and antibiotics in tuberculosis.

It may be taken orally, as an injection into a muscle or intravenously. The effects of dexamethasone are frequently seen within each day and last for about three days.

In a major breakthrough, OXFORD UNIVERSITY scientists have identified dexamethasone a steroid drug widely used to treat asthma, allergies, and rheumatoid arthritis, as significantly reducing the risk of death from CORONAVIRUS among patients with severe respiratory complications.

More than 11,500 patients in NHS hospitals are enrolled in the trial, which began in March with 2,104 patients receiving 6 mg of dexamethasone once a day (by mouth or intravenous injection) for 10 days. They were compared with 4,321 patients in usual care.

Dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-third in ventilated patients and by one fifth in patients receiving oxygen only. There was no evidence of benefit for patients who didn’t require oxygen. “Dexamethasone is that the first drug to be shown to enhance survival in Covid-19,” said Peter Horby, one among the chief investigators.

In India, the drug which is used to fight life-threatening sepsis and severe infections have annual sales of Rs 100 crore. Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila is its largest manufacturer. “There are enough supplies in India. It’s been used for over four decades in several indications, and is very affordable,” Zydus group chairman Pankaj Patel told TOI. Its price is regulated under the Drug control Order and is around Rs 5-6 per injection. It is also produced by small scale manufacturers

Said NICK CAMMACK a British charity that supports the science research “Dexamethasone must now be rolled out and accessed by thousands of critically ill patients around the world, he also added, ” it’s highly affordable, easy to form, are often scaled up quickly and only needs small dosage.”

Steroid drugs reduce inflammation, which sometimes develops in COVID-19 patients as the immune system overreacts to fight the infection. This overreaction can prove fatal, so doctors are testing steroids and other anti-inflammatory drugs in such patients. “This is that the great news and that I congratulate the govt of the united kingdom, the university of oxford, and therefore the many hospitals and patients within the UK who have contributed to this lifesaving scientific breakthrough.”
