Remove china apps reached top of the play store in India before it was ousted on Tuesday.
Google removed the Android app called Remove China Apps. Published by Jaipur based developers, The Remove china apps became popular due to recent ongoing tensions between India and China in the Ladakh region and social media backlash against TikTok.
A Google spokesman confirmed to news agency Reuters that the app has been removed due to violation of app store policies and didn’t give further details.
Satyajit Sinha, a cybersecurity researcher at count point, explains that the Remove china apps app just identifies the app developer’s country of origin by comparing it with a repository database of apps developed in China. Sinha says the app is safe to use and one shouldn’t worry about downloading it on their Android smartphones.
“The app scan focused on the installed android application package (APK) only. Hence, it doesn’t affect any change in stored personal data.”
A person familiar to the matter said that the software violated Google’s policies prohibiting third party apps or modifying devices settings or features.
Remove China Apps scanned user’s phones for apps such as ByteDance’s TikTok and Alibaba’s UC browser. Once deleted, a message popped up saying “ You are awesome, no china apps found “
OneTouch App labs, which developed the app, did not respond to a request for comment. On its website, it confirmed the app had been removed and thanked users for their support.
Many Indian and a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party gave us the hashtag #BoycottChineseproduct on social media, calling for the deletion of popular Chinese apps.
