Jessica Lal killer Manu Sharma aka Sidharth Vashishta walks out of Tihar Jail after LG approves the early release.

Jessica Lal murder convict Manu Sharma walked out of Jail after Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal accepted the observations of the Sentence Review Board (SRB ) recommending his release.

Manu Sharma, who was serving a life term after being convicted of the murder of model Jessica Lal in 1999. He was released from Tihar jail on Monday evening after lieutenant governor (LG) Anil Baijal accepted the recommendations of the Sentence Review Board (SRB).

The prison’s director general Sandeep Goel confirmed Sharma was released on Monday.

Last month Lal’s sister Sabrina had said that she had forgiven Manu Sharma and that he had served his time for the crime. Sabrina had also said that it was time for her to move on. “ My fight was always for justice. We got justice. If he is released. I have no problem.”

Sharma, who spent 16 years and 11 months in jail, his release was cleared because of “his good conduct” in jail and his “contribution in helping rehabilitate families of underprivileged prisoners”.

Former Union minister Venod Sharma’s son Manu Sharma was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in December 2006 for Lal’s high-profile murder in 1999. Lal, a model, was killed in cold blood on 30 April 1999 when she refused to serve liquor to Sharma and his friends after hours at an upscale Delhi restaurant.

In the past two years, Manu Sharma had been in an open jail on account of “good conduct”; he was allowed to leave the prison for work at 8 am and return at 6 pm. Eight years ago, Manu Sharma aka Sidharth Vashishta also started an eponymous non-profit for the rehabilitation of prisoners.

Siddhartha Vashishta Charitable Trust has funded the education of more than 500 children of prisoners, and he also gave “lucrative business ideas” to promote the TJ’s (Tihar Jail’s) brand, helping the turnover rise from Rs 3 crore to Rs 20 crore annually.
